Instruction of Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences
Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences (FAAS) was founded in 1960. The academy consisted of 14 research institutes on rice, tea, fruit, crops, edible fungi, sugarcane, animal husbandry and veterinary medicine, biotechnology, agricultural ecology, plant protection, soil and fertilizers, agricultural bioresources, agriculture engineering and technology, agricultural economy and scientific information, as well as 2 service centers e.g. the central lab and the training center.
FAAS had established 3 national key labs e.g. the national branch for rice improvement in Fuzhou, 6 provincial key labs e.g. Fujian key laboratory for precision instrument in agriculture test, 12 provincial R&D centers e.g. Fujian R&D center for livestock epidemic disease prevention and control, 8 national and provincial field experimental stations e.g. the longan and loquat national nursery and Fujian agricultural research field observation. The academy possessed the 142-hectare experimental fields in which more than 13,000 of plant varieties were preserved.
FAAS employed 1,090 staffs, including 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 6 nationally ranked experts, 19 provincially ranked experts, 73 gainers of special government allowances, 5 scientists with China's Talents Project, 39 scientists with Fujian’s Talents Project. The academy had 120 professors, 221 associate professors, 317 middle grad research fellows, among them 102 persons got their PhD degree and 307 persons got their master's degree. The academy jointly established the graduate school with Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and postdoctoral workstations. Every year more than 100 graduated students studied in the academy. During 1978 to 2010, the academy received 385 awards of scientific and technological achievement, of which, 104 research projects owned the remarkable prizes in China.
The academy focused on main applying researches and some basic researches. It established 10 innovation research teams such as crop breeding, horticultural science, agricultural microorganism, agricultural ecology, animal disease control, basic biology, plant protection, agricultural products processing, regional agricultural economy, edible fungi, among which, some research fields were famous in the world e.g. rice breeding (super rice and transgenic rice), fruit breeding (loquat, longan), livestock and poultry vaccination (muscovy duckling), fishery disease(Ichthyophthirius multifiliis Fouquet), biological pesticide, (biocide- ANTI8098A and biocide-BtA), plant pest control (predator mite, citrus HLB), agricultural ecology (azolla resources).
The academy persisted in the policy of serving agricultural production and agricultural enterprise. In recent years, the "two hundred" action was conducted to select 100 agricultural experts guiding 100 agriculture leading enterprises and 100 agricultural experts helping 100 professional farms in the countryside. More than 200 technology demonstration centers in the agriculture leading enterprises and over 300 technology demonstration bases in the professional farms were built up. The effective mechanism for agricultural science and technology to serve agricultural enterprises and farms was explored to promote the transformation of agricultural technological achievements into production practices.
